Kalibo, Aklan


Kalibo is the capital of the province of Aklan, in the northwest of Panay Island, Philippines. It is a First Class Municipality and the "International Gateway" of the Western Visayas Region, practically located at the center of all coastal municipalities of Aklan province.
As per the 2010 census, its population is 74,619 persons. As the commercial and educational center, it caters not only to the people of Aklan but also to transients coming from other nearby provinces, cities and countries. As a major tourism gateway, the influx of tourists to Boracay Island catalyzes rapid economic expansion and municipal landscape development. Tourism activity peaks in the heart of Kalibo every January as the yearly celebration of the world-famous Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Festival.

A yearly celebrated event, the Sto. Niño Ati-atihan festival is one of the most famous and celebrated festivites here in the Philippines. Celebrated every third sunday of January on the feast of the Holy Child - Sto. Niño, the marvel of Paeapak has prove its unique and miraculous healing traditions.

Ati-atihan festival is held at Kalibo City in Aklan where vibrant and colorful indigenous costumes parade along the streets of the city, loud and lively tribal dance will surely entice you to groove and join the fun. For years, Ati-atihan festival has been one of the most anticipated event here in asia that even foreign countries take time to visit and witness this glorious event.


Tourist Sites

Bakhawan Eco-park and Research Centre
~ New Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan ~
The Mangrove Reforestation Project, known as “Green Pearl of the Orient”, covers an extensive area of 790 hectares where Bakhawan Eco Park is situated, and teems with marine life such as a plethora of wild ducks, sea shells, crabs and other swamp life.
It is located in Barangay New Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan. It was a recipient of the Golden Eagle Award (1996) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for being one of the bests in Asia.

The Museo it Akean

The Museo it Akean, established in 1980, is a major cultural aspect of the Archbishop Gabriel M. Reyes Memorial Foundation, Inc. (AGMRMFI) in partnership with the municipality of Kalibo. It housed in the historic 1882 Eskuelahan it Hari (King’s School) building named in honor of King Philip of Spain which evokes the old glory and legacy of the past.

It is the oldest remaining building in Kalibo, situated at the very heart of the town and stands near the two other historic buildings; the Cathedral Parish of Saint John the Baptist and the old Tribunal, now the Captain Gil M. Mijares building which houses the Kalibo Police Station, the Municipal Library, and Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi) and the Pastrana Park.

The Museum has a treasure trove Kaliboatiatihan-21of Aklanon artifacts, including the talibong swords, wood and metal crafts, paintings of Aklanon artists, the piña cloth collections of Aklanons of yesteryears and showcases of the memorabilia of Aklan’s famous sons: Gabriel Martelino Reyes, Archbishop of Cebu and Manila; Jaime Cardinal Sin, the Archbishop of Manila and Godofredo Peralta Ramos, known as the “Father of Aklan”.

How to Get Here

Air
Air travel to Kalibo from Manila is about 45 minutes on a daily schedule with four airline companies flying: the Phiine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Zest Air and Airphil Expres. These airlines increase their flights daily during the KaliboAti-Atihan Festival in January. Airphil Express is also flying daily to Cebu with code share to Philippine Airlines and soon will fly to Clark starting March 29, 2012. AirAsia Philippines has started flight from Clark to Kalibo since March 15, 2012 and SeaAir has resumed its flights to Clark on May 4, 2012. Cebu Pacific just started their three times weekly flight to Hong Kong, and direct flights to Davao, Mandarin Airlines, TransAsia Airways, China Southern, China Airlines have weekly flights to and from Taipei, Taiwan and Philippine Airlines and Shanghai Airlines have chartered flights to and from Shanghai, China; Jin Air with code share to Korean Air is doing chartered flights from Incheon, Korea. Spirit of Manila has its chartered flight to Kalibo from its regional destinations. Zest Air being its hub for domestic and regional have twice daily flights to Seoul-Incheon Korea, twice weekly to Busan four times weekly to Shanghai China, twice a week Taipei Taiwan, Beijing and Chengdu Korea. Philippine Airlines has launched direct flights to Regional destinations in Hong Kong two times weekly and Seoul ICN (starting May 05, 2012) with four times weekly service. Kalibo is also the jumping off point for many international travellers heading to Boracay.
Kalibo International Airport is about ten minutes from the main plaza.

Sea
Kalibo at the moment does not have any major port or wharf, but the four ports throughout the province are accessible. Three shipping companies (MBRS, Moreta Shipping Lines and Negros Navigation) service Aklan passengers going to and from Manila, Capiz and Romblon. The New Washington port is 20 minutes away from Kalibo, while the port of Dumaguit, also in New Washington can be reached in an hour. Batan port is accessible via Dumaguit and Altavas while travel time to Malay port is approximately two hours. Travel time from Manila to Aklan is 14 to 18 hours through sea travel. The Caticlan Jetty Port is now part of the Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) Strong Republic Nautical Highway which connects Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, and it traverses the municipality of Kalibo going to Capiz and Romblon.
A jetty port however will be constructed in Barangay Pook mid of 2012.

Land
Public transportation around the city is by tricycle, taxi, multicab and jeepneys.
Kalibo is 160 kilometers from Iloilo City, 90 kilometers from Roxas City, and 175 kilometers from San Jose, Antique. Land travel from Iloilo City to Kalibo takes approximately two and a half to three hours, one and a half hours from Roxas City, and three to five hours from San Jose, Antique. All are accessible by bus and minivans. Trips to Caticlan range from 50 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the mode of transportation.
